Everybody is rehearsing for an upcoming recital when Mr. Russard has them stop. They sound wrong, and he asks them to try again. This happens again, and he tries once more, until Alfred realizes that the flutes have numerous holes in them. This makes everyone wonder if someone sabotaged the flutes as Mr. Thomas comes by. Mr. Russard tries to tell him that the rehearsal isn't going well, but he gets anxious and changes his mind, asking the students which tie they like better on him. He worriedly asks Alfred to solve the case, or else they'll be forced to cancel the recital.

He leads the trio to the area he stores the flutes, allowing them to investigate. They don't find anything wrong or unusual, other than a large hole on the wall. They remark that someone must have chewed through the wood and Alfred makes this clue 1. Camille and Milo go outside to investigate, while Alfred stays inside to look around. Milo seems less then enthusiastic, stating that they should let the animal chew through the flutes, so they won't have any more music class.

Alfred hears a sound and comes outside to find some salt. He remarks this is clue 2 and they go to Mr. Russard to ask him if he has any idea where it could have come from. He mentions keeping salt in the cupboard, but they check to find the cup is empty. He recalls filling it the previous night, and Alfred goes on to ask what wood the baton is made from. Mr. Russard reveals that he actually uses fiber glass, and Helmut made it and the flutes.

The group pay Helmut a visit and find him sculpting wood. Alfred explains what happened and asks to know what the wood is. It turns out that he doesn't actually use wood for the flutes, but deer antlers. Alfred makes this their third clue when they hear sound again. It's coming from a bush nearby, and Helmut dumps the water he had on it, causing it to stop.

The group rush back to Hedgequarters and review the gathered clues, and with solid answers, they head back to school to explain their findings to Mr. Russard. Just then, Milo panics upon seeing the nest in a nearby tree moving, and they find a porcupine in it. Alfred reveals it was the culprit, explaining that porcupines like the taste of salt and deer antlers. It happened to find the salt and wandered into the school, where it found the flutes. Mr. Russard thanks Alfred when they suddenly hear the bad flute playing again. Milo scares the porcupine away with it, when suddenly Winston Moose shows up. He is embarrassed because his antlers have shed again. Camille asks to borrow them, since they can use them to make some more flutes, and he agrees to let the kids have them.

Mr. Russard apologizes for the delay when he meets with Mr. Thomas, and with their brand new flutes the students are able to put on a proper performance.
