Casting Call is episode 5 of Mysteries of Alfred Hedgehog.

Premise[]

Gnarly Woods is preparing for their production of "Romeo and Juliet" and Ricardo is holding auditions to find the perfect Juliet. Cynthia wants the role more than anyone- leading everyone to blame her for problems caused during them.

Summary[]

Alfred and Milo show up to support Camille, who is trying out for Juliet in the upcoming play. She shushes them as Ricardo is talking, letting the girls who are there to try out that they will get started soon and he wanted to give them some advice.

As this is going on Cynthia is in the other room trying to rush her mom, who had to make a quick fix to her costume. But with her trying to hurry one of the buttons of her dress comes lose.

The auditions start and one girl starts, but she gets startled hearing an insulting voice from another girl somewhere. She tries to ignore it, but she gets so stressed out that she runs off stage having been reduced to tears. Camille remarks on the mean person doing this as Chloe comes out to take her turn, but the "heckler" makes her leave in a huff. This continues to annoy everyone as Cynthia shows up now to take her turn, and blame gets thrown her way. Ricardo calls off the auditions, too frustrated to keep going. They can resume once they figure out what is going on, upsetting everyone as he leaves; with several girls trailing after him.

Cynthia is stunned by everyone's animosity towards her now, and she tries to convince them to wait for her. She tries to defend herself but her mom holds her back, and she comforts her distressed daughter as Camille confronts her. She demands an explanation from Cynthia, but she continues to deny having done anything wrong. They are joined by Alfred and Milo, who ask Cynthia where she was prior to coming on stage. Cynthia hesitates to admit that she had a problem with her wardrobe and was in the other room trying to fix it before her turn.

While looking around the stage for clues, Milo accidentally stumbles across something and the stage turns around to reveal another set. In the process, he reveals a clue: a string belonging to a spool of thread. Cynthia decides to take off to try to find another dress, and they start to hear the "heckler" again. However, they have no proof of it being Cynthia and they take off for the Hedgequarters.

There, they listen to the recording Alfred took of the voice but they cannot identify its owner. They decide to head to Ricardo's to see if he has any suspicions as to who could have done it or ask if he noticed anything strange. But as they leave, they are startled by a couple of branches that fall loose in front of the door. Someone was spying on them. They head over to to Ricardo's to find him putting away his Romeo costume with disappointment, but before they can really say anything, Cynthia busts in to continue claiming innocence. It turns out that she was the one following them, and she explains that she might have found a clue.

Returning to the dressing room, Cynthia reveals the bird feather she saw while getting changed. Alfred takes it back to the Hedgequarters with them to go over the clues a final time. It dons on Alfred that the voice they heard might not have been anyone they knew, but someone intimidating something or someone else. He then connects it to the bird feather, saying how common it is of them to do that, and he suggests they return to the stage.

They find Cynthia in the middle of practicing for her turn, and Alfred asks what she and her mom were discussing earlier. Cynthia explains how her mom was showing her a variety of outfits to wear for her audition, and she was giving responses and opinions to them, causing Alfred to point out that the heckler was copying the sounds Cynthia was making. It's then Milo spots something and he climbs a nearby object to find a bird nest, causing Alfred to recognize the bird is a mockingbird, one that imitates the sounds of other animals and objects.

With that solved, Camille apologizes to Cynthia for blaming her unreasonably. They inform everyone of what happened and Ricardo announces that they can resume the auditions now. There, Camille manages to impress everyone as the mockingbird joins her, and Ricardo decides to give her the role of Juliet. Everyone cheers for her -except Cynthia- while Alfred and Milo chat in the background and share a laugh.

Trivia[]

  • Ms. Hedgehog is one of the people helping out at the auditions.
  • This is one of the few times Camille's blaming of Cynthia actually seemed reasonable, due to the bird sounding like her (and Cynthia being a bird herself).
  • Camille calls Cynthia's cousins "friends" in this episode.
  • Alfred is shown using sign language in this episode.
  • This is Ricardo's first speaking role in the series.
  • In the dressing room, as Alfred says someone is imitating Cynthia's voice, there is a pair of red boots that resemble Camille's.
  • The play featured in this episode is William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
  • This is the first episode where Camille was shown wearing something other than her normal outfit.
    • This is also the first episode her normal outfit does not appear.
    • It is also the only episode where she was shown in a dress.
    • Although Tina was not seen in the episode “Casting Call”, there was an image from the series showing her wearing a green outfit in a scene that resembled one from this episode.

Goofs[]

  • When the girls have their backs facing the camera, Gabby's hair is yellow. But when shown from the front it reverts to its normal color.
  • Clue 1, the thread, vanishes from Alfred's hand the second after he calls it a clue and speaks to Milo.
  • When Camille comments that they may have to cancel the audition, a strange line appears around her neck, but right after turning her head it disappears.
  • Right before the girls go on stage, Polly's muzzle color vanishes.
  • Camille claims "We accused you too early", but unless she meant everyone except Alfred and Milo she is technically wrong because they didn't accuse her.
  • When Camille holds her arms up to help Milo near the end of the episode, a block of color is on her shoulder.
  • Camille's theory of the voice belonging to Louise or one of Cynthia's other cousins was flawed. The voice only sounded like Cynthia and at the time, Louise was standing right next to her so she would have been aware if it was her.
  • When Alfred says "wait a sec" the middle of his shirt is the same color as his sleeves.
  • The noises Cynthia made sounded nothing like the noises the mockingbird made.
  • As Cynthia makes a comment near the end of the episode, her dress lacks its light green colored details.
  • Alfred's height is inaccurate in this episode.
  • The Gaumont websites description claims it was a Blue Jay imitating Cynthia and the play was for school. But in the episode, it was actually a mockingbird.
  • Also, Ricardo isn't shown attending the school, nor do the adult women trying out for the play.
