One late evening, Alfred, Camille and Milo get lost trying to navigate through the woods. It's late and their parents are going to get concerned if they don't hurry up. Milo begins to worry as they struggle trying to read their compass, and suddenly it starts to rain, forcing them to seek shelter beneath a large rock. It's then Alfred sees something in the distance, and he points out the old home nearby is glowing. This makes the trio anxious, and when lightning flashes they become scared and run away.

At Alfred's house, he points out the light they saw could have been from an event going on, or a left-over festival decoration. Camille is less-focused on that and more on teasing Milo though, trying to scare him further. Alfred notices the time and suggests they just spend the night due to the weather, and this way they can return to investigate the following day. But first they have to call their parents.

The next morning the trio return hoping to find what they saw again. Alfred points out the lack of life in this location before stating that the glowing couldn't be a result of electricity, and he calls this a clue after they are unable to find any sort of decorations. Suddenly, Milo falls through some wood that rotted and Alfred curiously observes it, until they pick up a fruity scent. It smells really good, and Alfred calls this their second clue before assuring Milo that he doesn't have to be frightened. They stand by the old home's front door and he suggests they knock on the door to see if someone is there, but they get startled after the door opens and a mysterious person peeks out.

The trio run away until they can barely see the house behind them. Polly Porcupine and Rudy run by and seem frightened, and they stop them to ask what happened. Rudy helps Milo up -having bumped into him- and explains that everyone in Gnarly Woods is starting to grow anxious and fearful of the glowing house. The trio weren't the only ones who saw it, and many of Gnarly Woods' residents are so afraid that they have been considering leaving. Once they go, Alfred tells Camille and Milo that they need to hurry up and figure out what was going on before things turn drastic.

Returning to the Hedgehog household, the trio try to determine what to do as Camille recalls the lady they saw. She looked like an elderly chipmunk- who Alfred's mother recognizes the description of as she joins them. She tells them that it was Coleen Radley, she owns the house. She chose to live a solitary lifestyle, which is why they didn't recognize her and nobody else lives in the same area. She begins to worry that they might have frightened her, causing them to feel remorse. They resume going over clues and Alfred mentions that they need to find something that glows, likes rotten things and smells sweet. He manages to uncover what said thing is and tells Camille and Milo that they will have to wait until that evening to prove it.

Come evening, Alfred describes the item that was glowing and reveals that Miss Radley's home is surrounded by "Jack-o-lantern Mushrooms". The fruit scent was from a pie she was making. The mushrooms are poisonous, which Alfred points out as Milo gets a closer look at their translucent appearance. With that, the trio decide to try explain what happened and want to make things up to the elderly chipmunk they scared. To do this, they offer to clean up all the fungus and rot surrounding her home as she isn't able to do it herself, but Milo requests that they wait until the following morning to start, causing the others to laugh.
