It's an average day and the group are hanging out in Alfred's room. There isn't much for them to do today, so they are very bored. Milo paces around and Camille complains that he is beginning to annoy her. Alfred yawns and remarks that mysteries just don't fall from the sky, Suddenly, they hear yelling and something drops down, covering Alfred's house and darkening the inside of it.

The trio run outside and Milo ducks behind Alfred seeing something move beneath the large sheet, and they find Mr. Thomas coming out of it, the sheet is actually his deflated hot air balloon. He explains how he was floating through the sky earlier when he heard a weird sound. He was then surrounded by fog and couldn't hear or see very well, then he tried to use his air horn and drop some bags to try gathering altitude. But his balloon started to deflate and he was forced to make a crash landing.

Milo suggest that someone probably sabotaged him in order to win the hot air balloon race, but Mr. Thomas doesn't want to believe such things. But it is all they have for the time being. Alfred asks him to make the noise he heard, but at first he does not want to, claiming to be bad at imitations. Camille manages to convince him to try since it could be important, and they are forced to hold back laughter, realizing he wasn't lying. The sound was as if someone was calling for someone named Frank, but nobody with that name lives in Gnarly Woods.

The trio go on to investigating the balloon when they come across multiple puncture wounds in the balloon. Alfred remarks this is a clue, and Milo theorizes that perhaps this "Frank" guy shot arrows into the balloon. They go on to check the balance bags when Milo trips over one, and they decide to track down the rest of them. Milo misunderstands and carries around the other three until they correct him. Suddenly, they hear the sound again.

Noticing its coming from the lake, the trio rush over there but are unable to find anything. They spot the last balance bag and Camille recognizes that this must have been the area where the balloon got attacked. They begin to pick up a gross smell and Milo discovers a half-eaten fish on the ground, which was just recently eaten. Alfred deduces this is their third clue and they return to Hedgequarters. Alfred uses the map to identify where each clue was and Milo plays the clip Alfred gathered earlier. They notice something and pause the video, and Camille remarks that they might have found the thing to pierce the balloon. Milo zooms in on the object but they have trouble determining what it is, so they head back to look again.

Milo begins to call for "Frank" and suddenly, they are surrounded by several herrings who get up and begin to fly around. Alfred then goes on to reveal that they are the cause of the balloon breaking. The noise Mr. Thomas made when he was surrounded by fog scared them and when they flew up, they pierced the balloon with their beaks being unable to see anything. As they realize Mr. Thomas will be alright and can fix his balloon, several eaten fish begin to fall from the herrings panic, causing Milo to frown as the others begin to laugh.
