Alfred comes into the kitchen to see his mom hanging up a paper depicting a prize for the upcoming flower competition. She put it there to remind her of what she can win if her flowers take the first prize, and suddenly someone knocks on their door. They find Mrs. Payne and Cynthia, having come by wanting to exchange gardening tips- but it becomes clear she only wanted to find out what Mrs. Hedgehog is growing. It turns out that they both chose hydrangea.

Mrs. Hedgehog realizes what is going on and shuts the door on her abruptly, causing Cynthia to throw a small fit until her mother chastises her. They leave and pass by Camille and Milo, leaving them confused until they arrive at the Hedgehog's to find out what was going on. Just then, Mrs. Hedgehog cries out in alarm and the trio rush to the backyard to find her staring at her light purple hydrangea. They look okay, until she explains that she was trying to grow blue ones. Somehow they turned purple. Seeing her dismay over this, Camille wonders if someone tried to sabotage her. Alfred wants to help his mother and decides to hold an investigation as she heads inside.

The trio start looking for clues when Milo spots a foot print. They make a mold of it by mixing some water and soil together, and while waiting for it to dry they look for another clue. They find someone digging up dirt and realize it's just Minnie, who pops out and reacts with disgust. She remarks that the soil tastes yucky, and once she gets out of her hole and leaves, Alfred marks this as their second clue. They head to Hedgequarters next and go over possible suspects, but Alfred seems unsure they should, because they have little to work with. Until Camille brings up the possibility of it having been Mrs. Payne. Alfred decides that rather than theorizing, they should just go speak with her, but he remains doubtful someone tampered with the flowers.

At the Payne residence, the trio try to find a foot print match when Cynthia catches them as they try locating the garden and her mom's shoes. Alfred tries to get Cynthia to cooperate, saying it's important and could clear her mom's innocence, but Cynthia demands they leave. Camille and Milo are disappointed, but Alfred recalls that Mrs. Payne only wears heels, which wouldn't match the foot print they got. They return to Hedgequarters and go over the samples they gathered earlier. The flower seems to be very healthy, and the fertilizer isn't bad either.

Suddenly, Camille wonders if the fertilizer could have something to do with it, and they find it plausible, so Alfred returns home to talk to his mom again. He asks her if she used any fertilizer and she claims she didn't, leaving them unsure of what to check for now. But as they prepare to leave Alfed spots his dad napping nearby, and realizes his shoe matches the foot print. His attempt to pull it off awakens his dad, and Alfred explains what happened. He asks his dad why he was in the garden, and Mr. Hedgehog explains that he built a stone wall for the garden.

The trio head to the backyard again to check and Alfred uses the Detectaberry to get a picture, deciding this has to be the third clue. They pay Rudy Gopher a visit as he was the one who gave Alfred's dad the stone, and they go over what happened with him. He reveals the stone he supplied was limestone; it makes soil less acidic. Alfred returns home with his answer and they explain that low acid usually turns Hydrangea pink, but they turned people, which they still need to figure out. Mrs. Hedgehog thinks she should give up, but then she asks if she might have time to turn them pink before the competition. Alfred suggests she add more limestone and she agrees to try it out.

On the day of the contest Mrs. Hedgehog is revealed to have taken first place for her gorgeous pink hydrangea. Mrs. Payne and Cynthia storm off in disappointment and the group celebrate for Alfred's mom. She invites Camille and Milo to join them on vacation for helping and everyone cheers.
