On a dark, stormy, windy night, Alfred, Camille and Milo head to the Hedgequarters to grab something. Milo starts looking at an odd book as Alfred struggles to get the door open, asking for his and Camille's help. They are forced to use brute force to open it, and Alfred takes the book while Milo struggles to shut the door. Now they can properly discuss which books to order next. They have so many choices, and Milo gets up to confirm they don't already own a book when suddenly, the bookshelf falls down.

Milo is alright, but Alfred wonders what made it fall over like that. Milo is quick to assume a ghost may be involved but Alfred disagrees. Camille and Milo become apprehensive then, noticing something behind him. Alfred is barely phased, suggesting they resume their book ordering. Milo watches as a book slides across the table and falls off the other side. He points it out and Alfred curiously observes, then remarks that the table is fine. But it is mysterious, so he decides to hold an investigation. Milo mentions that something may have bumped the table, and they go on to check its balance using a marble. It rolls and they make this the first clue before heading outside.

Suddenly, some nearby rocks begin to fall, and Camille wonders if it could be the work of "Ol' Fingerbones". He was in a book they were recently reading, and she believes he could be haunting them. This worries Milo but Alfred has to keep reminding them they do not have proof of ghost existing. When they lightning flashes outside, they spot the spooky shape again, and they end up hiding behind some trees. This causes the anxious Camille and Milo to consider heading elsewhere to continue their meetings from now on, but Alfred refuses and heads back inside. Everything is normal, they're just letting their imaginations get the better of them. With that, he suggests they wait until tomorrow to solve the mystery.

The following morning, Camille and Milo refuse to step foot in Hedgequarters, until Alfred assures them that everything is fine. He reveals clue two to them, an odd bump on the floor; a root. Which is also their third clue. Following the root, Alfred determines that he has solved the case.

Alfred states that Ol' Fingerbones is responsible for the problems, but the Hedgequarters isn't haunted. The roots in the tree were trying to find nutrients and water, so they should talk to Rudy for help. They can trim down the roots so things should return to normal. Suddenly, something starts tapping on the window. It startles the trio until they realize its one of the roots, causing them to laugh afterwards.
