The episode begins with Alfred and co. playing against Cynthia in a game of basketball. After scoring a point, it starts to storm. The group of children take shelter on the school porch and Alfred grabs Lilly. Lilly is frightened, so Milo tries to calm her down by picking up a stick and pretending it to be sword, and then a magicians wand. Cynthia tells him to stop acting goofy, along with Camille and thunder and lightning begin to clap in the sky, frightening the Payne's as the huddle together.

Suddenly, an orb of light appears before Milo. Lilly happily remarks that he must be a magician after it vanishes, but Cynthia and her cousin's panic cause them to run away as more lightning strikes. Alfred is suspicious and decides they should study this strange phenomenon. They head to Hedgequarters, where Alfred studies the piece of wood Milo was playing with. He mentions that a mark would have been left on it if the ball of light came from it. He turns on his computer to replay the video he took of the strange event moments ago. He remarks its ability to explode their first clue. Camille asks if it could have been fire or electric, as it was sparking. Alfred replays the video a few more times while trying to see if any other clues come from this. He turns up the volume and they can hear it hissing.

The group heads back to the basketball court to examine the scene in hopes of finding something. By now Milo is beginning to believe that he did cast magic, but Camille and Alfred disagree. They keep looking as Milo tries to re-cast the spell. As he turns around they notice a burnt marking on the back of his shirt. Alfred rubs it and determines it is soot, and he notices the nearby pole has soot on it too. He makes this their third clue.

Just as they prepare to head back to Hedgequarters, Chloe flies overhead begging for help. They stop out of curiosity and she reveals that Cynthia told her everything about a "magician" and she flies away in an uproar.

Back at Hedgequarters they go over the clues and compare the hissing sound to various things. Since it was raining, the ball of light was so hot that it boiled the air surrounding it. Lilly wishes that Milo was a magician as Alfred deduces the truth. The foursome leave in hopes of clearing everything up with the others to keep them from panicking any further.

At the school Cynthia shows up with her cousins once more and everybody begins to demand an answer to what that freaky thing was. She blames Milo, but Alfred quickly stops her to reveal it was "ball lightning". A rare occurrence that only few have seen and if Milo hadn't been playing around like he was they would have missed it; thanks to him, they got to see something special that they will most-likely never see again. Cynthia is annoyed by this and she storms off with her cousins, and Milo starts to laugh. He remarks that it's good he isn't magical, revealing the "wand" he accidentally broke.
