What will happen to Cynthia's beans?

"The Malfunctioning Magic Beans" is part 2 of episode 15. It first aired on February 11th, 2010.

Premise[]

The upcoming Magic Trick competition between Gnarly Woods and Black Forest is coming up, and Mr. Russard is deciding who will represent Gnarly Woods. Cynthia's act begins to act up though, leading to accusations of sabotage.

Summary[]

Mr. Russard asks Milo if he's ready to show the class his magic trick so they can decide who will be competing against Black Forest in the annual Magic Show. Milo mentions his trick involves a magical coin and begins to demonstrate that it can float- only for him to accidentally reveal the trick when the magnet under his sleeve becomes visible. It also ends up attracting other magnetic objects and he hurriedly sits down.

Cynthia prepares to take her turn, as the winner of the competition the past two years, they have high expectations. Cynthia explains how her trick involves magical beans. She holds up a light that causes them to start "dancing" around, earning everyone's approval. Mr. Russard voices confidence in her winning again, and Milo is disappointed that he can't compete with his trick; which is very flawed right now. Camille and Alfred encourage him not to give up yet.

The next morning Alfred is preparing to leave as he witnesses his parents bickering over which place will win the magic contest. He leaves as his friends arrive and they head to the location, where they find Cynthia demanding justice. Someone tried to sabotage her, and she threatens to leave as Milo quietly laughs at her expense. Alfred manages to convince Cynthia to wait until he can find an answer, or at least some proof before she reports this "sabotage". He asks that she shows him what happened as Mr. Russard stands nearby. Cynthia explains how she was going to practice her magic act, but for some reason the beans aren't dancing anymore.

Alfred studies the beans up close with Camille and Milo to find tiny holes on the sides of the beans. Milo accidentally cracks one open, and Alfred remarks they are hollow- which means whatever was in them is no longer. He asks Cynthia how she makes the beans dance, and she refuses to tell them until they accuse her of being a sham knowing her pride wouldn't stand for it. She accidentally reveals that she bought the beans from Barney, he told her that she was a good magician.

They go to Barney to ask him about this, but he denies knowing anything until they confront him with what they learned, knowing Cynthia got the beans from him. Alfred also thinks that he's just hiding something from them when suddenly a bunch of moths appear. Camille looks into a box to find a jar filled with magic beans, which proves Cynthia bought them from him. Alfred remarks that the moths are their third clue, and they return to solve the mystery.

Alfred determines what happened as they make their way back in time for Razzy to introduce the contestants at the amphitheater. Everybody cheers as he wishes them both luck and Black Forest goes first, the young boy performing his trick uses magic rings. Cynthia sees Alfred and asks if she can accuse them of cheating yet, but Alfred tells her that she can't, the magic beans she was given were actually "Mexican jumping beans". Which is another name used to describe pods filled with moth larvae.

Mr. Russard is disappointed to announce that this means Gnarly Woods will have to drop out, considering Cynthia was cheating. But as they prepare to do so, Milo suddenly trips and the gold trophy ends up floating over to him. This amazes the judges so much that they award Milo first place, and everybody cheers for him.

Quotes[]

  • Alfred: "We just found our second clue!"
  • Cynthia: "Clue?!? I don't need clues, I need revenge!"

-----

  • Cynthia: "Stop saying trick and get on with it..."

-----

  • Milo: "I'll go tell the judge!"
  • Mr. Hedgehog: "Aw, not again!"
  • Mrs. Hedgehog: "Too bad! Maybe next year!"

Trivia[]

  • Despite not having visible ears, Louise wears earrings.
    • In the final episode of the series, Cynthia was revealed to wear them too.
  • Besides Mr. Hedgehog being on Black Forest's side, Dr. Anna is also there, which most-likely implies she too was born there.
  • As seen in this episode, it appears that Black Forest is mostly populated with wolves.
  • One of the objects that hit Milo's Magnet was a retainer. However, it isn't revealed who it belongs to.
  • Camille is shown writing down pictures of the clues, something they usually do not do.
  • Razzy has a cameo appearance in this episode, but his design is slightly different.

Goofs[]

  • The "magic beans" keep changing size throughout the episode.
  • When Milo walked back to the seat, the only thing shown still on him was the magnifying glass. Yet a scene later when Louise takes back her earrings, he had a bunch of pencils stuck to him.
  • When Cynthia says: "Something wrong?!" it looks like her tongue disappears.
  • Milo snapped the bean shell open, but not into separate pieces like it showed.
  • When Milo points out that he's stuck to the beam, his hair lacks its white coloring.
  • When Razzy first appears he has normal teeth like most of the characters, but later, he has his regular fanged teeth.
  • The chalkboard behind Cynthia was shown with glowing yellow stars on it. But before and after this, they were just drawn with white chalk.
  • The tape on Milo shouldn't have come off as easily as it did when Mr. Russard helps him remove it. Especially with all of his fur.
  • Milo made the penny stick on the magnet, but pennies do not normally stick to magnets.
