Milo excitedly tries to ask Camille and Alfred what they got for him for his birthday. They refuse to tell him but he keeps asking. Camille tells him to wait until their picnic, but he really wants to find out now. They tell him to at least eat his cake first. But as they begin to dig in a tree suddenly falls down. Winston approaches and panics, thinking the trio are a ghost as they got covered in frosting.

They go to the lake nearby to clean off while explaining what happened to him. He mentions that other trees fell too, and concerned over how weird this is, Alfred decides they should try to determine what's causing this problem to occur.

As they overlook the scene, they notice Rudy and Grizz putting up things to keep people away from the crime scene. Milo mopes over his destroyed cake, until he notices one of the wood pieces is blue. Rudy mentions that he saw Mr. Remy with blue wood, so they head over to his place to see it. Mr. Remy doesn't seem to understand, but they don't believe him after they see the wood in question. He reveals the blue wood to them, which he made into chairs, tables and other objects. Alfred then asks where he got the wood, but Mr. Remy doesn't want to reveal that.

Camille explains that its important because so many trees have fell over. He brings up a place known as Velvet Grove, and they head over there to find more dead trees. This is weird, because this was a pine tree, and none of the other trees appear to be getting sick. Mr. Remy rushes over to them to reveal that someone destroyed his brand new furniture. Alfred asks Mr. Remy if he glued the furniture properly and Mr. Remy shows them what he used. Milo then notices some pine nuts- which Alfred corrects him by revealing they are actually bugs.

Taking a picture of the tiny insects, the group head back to Hedgequarters to go over their clues. Milo does not understand how such tiny creatures could kill the trees, and Alfred goes over a list of bugs, and once he gets his answer he rushes to Rudy's location to inform them that the bugs in question are bark beetles. They eat pine trees and they leave behind a fungus that dehydrates the tree, which is what makes them blue. Rudy decides that they can use some pheromones to destroy the bugs to keep the rest of the trees safe, and Milo expresses his disliking of them, because they ruined his birthday. He's very surprised when Camille and Alfred reveal a new cake has been made for him, and they still have his present.

Out of concern, Milo decides to head home to make sure nothing happens to the cake again. But he trips as he goes to leave, but luckily, Alfred catches the cake. Everyone begins to laugh after they express relief.

Quotes[]

  • Alfred: "They're called bark beetles."
  • Milo: "What? I didn't hear them bark... did you?"

------

  • Grizz: "Hey! Can I finish off the icing?"

-----

  • Alfred: "But something's happening here and it's serious mysterious!"

Trivia[]

  • In reality, Bark Beetles actually don't leave fungus behind. It's a self-living organism that acts parasitic on wounded pine trees.

Goofs[]

  • Notice what happens after Winston says: "Aaah! Ghosts!" When it shows the group for a second, Alfred and Milo's eye colors are swapped.
  • The mess of frosting on Milo changes formation between scenes.
  • When Camille refuses the cake/gift to Milo at the beginning of the episode, she isn't shown holding the bag, but in the scene before and after she is.
    • Also notice the bag being twice in size when she begins to run away.
  • Red was on the cake, but none of it was shown on the cake splatter.
  • Winston was shown with no teeth when depicted up-close before the scene changed.
  • Rudy's nose/snout looks longer than it normally is when he was putting up the tape.
  • A lot of cake splatter occurred, but there was barely any at the scene of the crime.
  • The picture only shows four bugs in Milo's hand. Yet he had about 6-7 when he tosses them.
  • When Alfred and co arrive to the crime scene at the end of the episode, the picnic wasn't anywhere nearby. But before the scene switch, it is there.
  • Milo trips, but when Alfred caught the cake he's suddenly standing by Rudy.
    • Also note that despite holding the cake, nobody's hands had frosting on them.
