Milo shows Camille and Alfred his new shoes when suddenly, Lily rushes to them claiming someone is dying. They rush back to where she was to see Old Gnarly, one of the oldest trees in Gnarly Woods. Alfred picks up an old brown leaf that fell from it as Rudy approaches them. He was concerned about it too, and he recalls that he tripped over a tree root earlier while delivering something. Alfred rubs the root, but finds nothing suspicious as Milo asks how the roots could have gotten so bad in a short time span. They weren't like this last week.

Worried for the safety of others, Rudy suggests they cut Old Gnarly down. Lily is against it, but Alfred isn't exactly sure what to do about the situation since it might just be its time to go. But when Lily begs him and is clearly upset about it, Alfred promises to at least try to help determine what is going on. Lily suggests Old Gnarly might not be dying, it could just be something else, so Alfred, Camille and Milo begin their investigation.

While walking along, the trio accidentally get in the way of Mr. Remy's picture. He assures the kid's its alright though. They ask if he has any books regarding the old tree, and he shows them the album from when Old Gnarly was planted; but when Alfred's mom was around his age. They recognize a few other people in the image as well, and Alfred determines that for a tree, Old Gnarly isn't actually that old yet. So this is clue one. Milo goes on to remark that they won't be lucky enough to have a clue drop down on them, and he wonders if they might be forced to climb Old Gnarly.

Suddenly, a branch falls down. Alfred deems this clue two and they come across Rudy and Grizz getting ready to cut down the tree. He asks how much time they have left and the trio hurry to continue searching for another clue. But by evening, they are still left with little go with and they return to the tree for another inspection. They ask Camille to stay behind in case someone comes by, she can distract them. Alfred and Milo find worms crawling around the surface of the tree, but unfortunately Grizz shows up and they are forced to leave.

The following morning, they hold a clue review to think about everything they gathered. Old Gnarly isn't that old, and even though it rained recently it seems to be very dry. Alfred also collected dirt from Milo's shoes. Milo and Camille observe the dirt to discover rock salt in it, and the trio realize that is what caused Old Gnarly to become sick.

They rush back to the tree just in time to see Grizz preparing his saw, all ready to cut it down. Alfred stops him and explains that the cause of its illness is salty water. Old Gnarly is drying out and that was what caused its gradual decay. But if they relocate it, it should be okay.

Soon, Old Gnarly returns to its once beautiful and lush, healthy state. Everyone is much happier to have solved this with a peaceful solution without getting rid of it.

Quotes[]

Trivia[]

  • Realistically, an oak tree would have needed more time to grow to the size Old Gnarly was.
  • This is one of the few episodes where part of the investigation was held at night.
  • Alfred's mom is seen standing next to a hedgehog that resembles her husband. This could mean that he moved to Gnarly Woods at a young age
    • It's possible that the older hedgehog in the picture is one of their mothers/Alfred's grandmothers.
  • In one episode, Milo was deathly afraid of hiking. But in this episode he was fine, implying he overcame this fear, or it was forgotten.
  • Alfred is shown using a computer in this episode, while normally he uses a laptop or his phone.

Goofs[]

  • Mr. Remy tells them to look on the back of the photo to see if anything was wrote down. Yet they do not actually do this and still read what was written.
  • Grizz was holding a saw in his left hand, but when he approaches Milo he isn't holding it. A scene later it was on the ground.
  • Before the dirt is pointed out on Milo's shoe, there was no dirt visible anywhere.
  • A leaf is by Rudy's feet as Alfred asks him if he spilled salt, but when the scene is shown from another angle the leaf is missing.
